- Judah begins to be attacked by King Rezin (of Aram) and King Pekah (of Israel)

- King Rezin (Aram) & King Pekah (Israel) attack Jerusalem
[cf. Isa 7:1-16] - Ahaz pays King Tiglath-Pileser III (of Assyria) for help, so the Assyrians capture Damascus & kill Rezin

- Ahaz visits Damascus, where he sees a
[pagan] altar; he orders a similar one to be built for the temple [in Jerusalem, see also 2 Chr 28:22-25] & changes the temple’s designs [disregarding Ex 25:8-9, 1 Chr 28:11-19]

17:1-6
- Hoshea is evil before God
- King Shalmaneser of Assyria attacks & makes Hoshea his servant,
- but Hoshea rebels, so Shalmaneser besieges Samaria, then exiles the Israelites
[as his slaves]
[Israel’s exile had been prophesied by Ahijah (during the reign of King Jeroboam I) in 1 Kings 14:15-16]

- It was because Israel was idolatrous & wicked that God sent them into exile in Assyria

- The king of Assyria
[King Esarhaddon, cf. Ezra 4:1-2] imports foreigners to live in Samaria - They don’t worship God so are attacked by lions until a priest is sent to teach them to fear God
17:29-41
- The imported people worship God but they don’t keep His covenant & they also worship idols
[These people eventually become known as ‘Samaritans’, e.g. see John 4:9]
B14. King Hezekiah of Judah
18:1-4
- Hezekiah is good; he destroys altars & idols & the
[idolatrous] snake of Moses [from Num 21:8-9]
18:5-8
- Hezekiah worships God; he refuses to serve Assyria; he is victorious against the Philistines
18:9-12
- Recap: In Hezekiah’s 4th year, Israel was attacked by Assyria & went into exile

- King Sennacherib (Assyria) attacks Judah; Hezekiah gives him silver & gold to withdraw
18:17-37
- King Sennacherib sends his chief officers and a great army to Jerusalem
- One of the chief officers says to the people in Jerusalem, ‘God cannot rescue Jerusalem from Assyria!’
19:1-7
- Hezekiah goes to the temple
[to pray] & also consults Isaiah who says, ‘[Sennacherib] will die!’
19:8-13
- The chief officer leaves to fight other battles, but sends a threatening
[letter] to Hezekiah
19:14-34
- Hezekiah lays the letter before God & prays
- Isaiah prophesies, ‘Assyria will be defeated!’
19:35-37
- That night, an angel kills the Assyrian army
- Sennacherib returns home & is assassinated
20:1-11
- Hezekiah is sick & Isaiah prophesies, ‘You will die!’
- Hezekiah weeps & prays, and God hears him & tells Isaiah, ‘I will add 15 years to his life!’
- Hezekiah asks for a sign
[that God will allow him to recover], so a shadow moves backwards [miraculously]
20:12-21
- Babylonian envoys visit Hezekiah, so he
[proudly] shows them all his treasures; - Isaiah prophesies, ‘Babylon will take all the treasure you showed them!’
