Part A: The curses and the blessings (cf. 11:26-30)

27:1-8

• Set up stones on Mount Ebal & write the Law on them; also build an altar [see Josh 8:30-32]

27:9-10

• Today, you Israelites have become God’s people so you should obey His laws (cf. 26:16-19)

27:11-13

• Pronounce blessings from Mount Gerizim and curses from Mount Ebal [see Josh 8:33-35]

27:14-26

• List: The Levites must pronounce, ‘Cursed is the person who...’ [various sinful actions are listed]

28:1-14

• List: The blessings & rewards that follow obedience to God’s Law [see also Lev 26:3-13]

28:15-68

• List: The curses & punishments that follow disobedience to God’s Law [see also Lev 26:14-39]

Part B: The Covenant is renewed

29:1-8

• This is the covenant made at Moab:

a. Remember God’s care & provision for you (cf. 8:2-4)

29:9-15

b. Keep the covenant: God promises to make you His people, and He will be your God (cf. 26:16-19)

[Not a new covenant requiring sacrifice; an affirmation of the covenant in Ex 19:5-6, 24:7-8]

29:16-29

c. If you turn from God: don’t think, ‘I’ll be safe’; the Land will suffer! [cf. Jer 7:4-15, 22:8-9]

30:1-10

d. When you return to God: He will have mercy on you & will bless you [cf. Lev 26:40-45]

30:11-20

e. The commands are not too difficult as God’s Word is near, so choose to love & obey God

The final actions of Moses

Moses writes down the book of the Law

31:1-8

• Moses says to Israel, ‘God will lead you into the Land!’ & tells Joshua to be brave [as leader]

31:9-13

• Moses writes down the Law, to be read every 7 years when debts are cancelled (see 15:1-2)

31:14-23

• v14-15, v23, God commissions Joshua & says be brave [cf. Num 27:18-23];
• v16-22, Moses must write a song to act as a witness against the Israelites when they break the Law (see 32:1-43)

31:24-30

• The book of the Law is given to the Levites; Moses prophesies that the Law will not be kept

32:1-18

PART 1: Listen! God has been good, but His people have forgotten Him [cf. Isa 1:2-4]

32:19-35

PART 2: [So] God declares, ‘I will punish My people for their wickedness’ [cf. Isa 1:5-9]

32:36-43

PART 3: [Then] God will rescue His people, punish the enemy [who attacked them] & have mercy

32:44-47

• Moses & Joshua teach the song to the people; Moses tells them to take all the words to heart

Moses gives his blessing then he dies

32:48-52

• God tells Moses, ‘Ascend Mount Nebo & view the Land before you die’ [cf. Num 27:12-14]

• Moses blesses Israel & blesses each individual tribe [excluding Simeon, cf. Gen 49:5-7]

ch. 34

• Moses ascends Mount Nebo, views the Promised Land, dies at age 120, and is buried by God
